Public Profile

Distinguished and Famous people from Lithgow

🌟 Sir Joseph Cook

Joseph Cook arrived in Australia in 1885 and worked in Lithgow’s collieries, bringing experience that had begun as a child in Staffordshire coal mines. He developed his education through private study, including bookkeeping and debating, before entering politics. His political affiliations changed over time, and he became Australia’s sixth prime minister in 1913. Lithgow belongs to the working and political beginnings of that career. It is a stronger connection than a passing official visit: mining employment placed him within the community whose industrial life helped shape his early public outlook.

🌟 Marjorie Jackson-Nelson

Marjorie Jackson became the “Lithgow Flash” before winning both the 100 and 200 metres at the 1952 Helsinki Olympics. As a teenager, she had already made international headlines by defeating Dutch champion Fanny Blankers-Koen in Sydney. Her career ultimately included two Olympic and seven Commonwealth Games gold medals and numerous world records. Later life brought fundraising for leukaemia research and service as governor of South Australia. Lithgow’s place in the biography is the upbringing and early athletic identity behind the nickname, well before the ceremonial offices and national honours.
