Lithgow is a city located in the central tablelands of New South Wales, Australia. It is around 140 kilometres west of Sydney and has a population of approximately 22,000 people. The area has a rich and interesting history, with evidence of Aboriginal occupation dating back thousands of years.

Early European Settlement

The first European to explore the Lithgow area was surveyor George Evans in 1813. The following year, William Cox led the first European expedition across the Blue Mountains, and the Lithgow Valley was seen as a potential site for a settlement due to its abundant natural resources of timber, water, and fertile soil.

The first agricultural estates were established in the 1820s, and by the 1830s, Lithgow was a bustling agricultural area with wheat, maize, and vegetables being grown along the fertile river flats.

Industrialisation

In the late 1800s, the discovery of coal and iron ore in the area prompted a period of industrialisation in Lithgow. The first blast furnace was constructed in 1875 by the Lithgow Valley Iron and Steel Company, and the area became known for its iron and steel production.

During World War I, Lithgow became a major manufacturing centre, producing everything from munitions to railway locomotives. The local steelworks was a vital supplier of steel products to the war effort.

Modern Lithgow

Today, Lithgow is a thriving city with a diverse economy. Mining and manufacturing industries continue to be significant employers, but the area has also embraced tourism. The surrounding Blue Mountains, with their stunning natural beauty, attract visitors from all over the world.

The Lithgow Valley has a proud industrial heritage, and many historic buildings and structures can still be found in the area, including the Blast Furnace Park, the Eskbank House Museum, and the State Mine Heritage Park.
